 MARINE RESCUE TRAINING
The International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) created an international standard concerning competence of lifeboat vessel crew for marine rescue in 2002. The goals of the standard are to raise the level of professional skills and work safety of the volunteers and to bring the competence of the volunteers from the different associated countries up to the same levels. The training practices of the Finnish Lifeboat Institution are based on the IMRF standards taking into account local conditions and practices.
The training system of the Lifeboat Institution covers training of the vessel crew from trainee to captain. The goal of the training is to provide the volunteers with such know-how and skills that they can safely and efficiently carry out their rescue duties in the institution’s rescue vessels.
The comprehensive training includes, for example, search and rescue skills, first aid and vessel-specific training. Most of the training is carried out in the institution’s training center in Bågaskär. The prerequisites for participation are membership of a local association in addition to being actively involved in a rescue crew.
During 2005, the Institution focused its training and development activities on work safety, improvement of professional skills and cooperation skills. In this operating year, a common health standard for volunteers is being implemented on a national level.
