ORGANIZATION

As the central organization, the Finnish Lifeboat Institution provides the national level management functions for voluntary search and rescue operations. It is responsible for resource management and fund raising. It manages the development of professional competence, vessel acquisition, basic maintenance and inspection systems and communication and relationship management with our interest groups.

Voluntary maritime rescue service has a long tradition in Finland. The first maritime rescue station run by volunteers was established on the island of Suursaari as early as 1857. The Finnish Lifeboat Institution was founded 40 years later to coordinate and develop the activities of the voluntary rescue services in Finland. Institution celebrated its 110-year anniversary this year.
